Live sports production has gone through a massive amount of change over the last year. Issues including the lack of connectivity from site, the reduction of onsite production teams, coupled with safety and COVID protocols which has presented its own unique challenges, has seen Timeline raise to the occasion in terms of innovation, adaption and versatility.
Back in 2018, Timeline developed the first complete remote production solution for Whisper’s Women’s Super League contract. Using Mobile Viewpoint’s H.265 based 4G bonding and IP transmission solution based around the Blackmagic URSA Broadcast camera and the Blackmagic 3G-SDI Shield for the Arduino minicomputer.
Since then, Timeline has delivered 3 seasons of football and over 350 matches using this model, but this technology really came into its own when COVID hit. Timeline’s solution kept hundreds of shows on air during 2020 including BT Sport’s MotoGP, The Early Kick Off Show and BBC’s MOTD. Timeline deployed cameras that its engineers could remotely control.
The remote workflow harnesses fast internet channels to send live coverage to a central control system housed at Timeline’s Ealing Broadcast Centre. The Mobile Viewpoint transmitter housed in a backpack for signal transmission goes back to the central control unit. The private network also enables remote talkback tallies and camera control from Timeline’s Broadcast Centre. With this solution remote productions can now be delivered where there is limited connectivity and over 4G and 5G.
