I see every day how new technology in defense can drive progress in many other industries. Today, I want to highlight an exciting development that is changing the future of European defense – and could soon impact the commercial and civil sectors as well. The European Defense Fund (EDF) is making a major investment in drone technology, and this move is set to spark innovation across the board.
Strategic Investment in European Defense
This year, the European Commission is investing €910 million through the EDF to support 62 projects in 17 important areas, including drones, helicopter technology, and missile systems. What stands out is not just the amount of funding, but the clear strategy behind it: Europe wants to boost its technological edge and create a stronger, more competitive industrial base. The EDF is designed to drive innovation, support small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), and keep Europe at the forefront of defense technology. You can read more about the EDF’s 2025 work program in the European Commission’s official announcement.

Ukraine Joins Forces with Europe
For the first time, Ukrainian defense companies are working alongside EDF projects, bringing valuable real-world experience and expertise in drone technology. Ukraine is now seen as one of Europe’s top drone manufacturers, and its partnership with EU companies will help develop the next generation of drones – autonomous, AI-powered, and ready for use on land, sea, and air. This collaboration shows the EDF’s commitment to learning from real-world situations and encouraging innovation across borders.
Driving Dual-Use Innovation
Why does this matter beyond defense? The new technologies being developed – such as advanced sensors, hybrid engines, and AI-powered systems – can be used in many ways outside the military sector. History shows that defense breakthroughs often lead to new commercial products and services. By focusing on disruptive technologies and supporting SMEs, the EDF is creating opportunities for innovations that could soon be used in fields like logistics, public safety, and environmental monitoring.

Looking Ahead
At Vislink, we know that partnerships between public investment and private creativity are key to progress. Europe’s bold approach, especially its new partnerships with Ukraine, is setting the stage for defense-driven innovation that will benefit many sectors.
Together, we have the opportunity to shape a future where innovation in defense leads to advancements that benefit society as a whole.
